Sovereign sits on Highway 15, about 26 kilometres south-east of Rosetown, in the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews No. 287.
It was a village until the end of 2005. On December 31 of that year it gave up village status and became a special service area within the rural municipality, which is how it is organized today.
